OVERALL GOAL /MISSION
“Promoting Rights through Community Action” Improved Access to Inclusive Education for Children with Disabilities” is
a joint endeavour of Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK), Leonard Cheshire Disability (LCD) South Asia Regional Office and
European Union (EU), which has been implemented in Nilphamari District of Bangladesh, one of the most poverty-
stricken areas of the country. Under the supervision of LCD, GUK is responsible for the implementation of the project.
Overall objectives: Children with disabilities (CWDs) are able to enjoy the right to education on an equal basis with
others in an inclusive and empowered society.
Specific objectives of the project are as follows:
To ensure that 2,100 children with disabilities are enrolled and retained in 100 mainstream schools in the selected
project location; To ensure the provision of quality inclusive education through capacity-building of key stakeholders
including parents and teachers; To create a knowledge base and facilitate linkages in order to support collective actions
of a larger alliance of NSAs; To ensure the effective implementation of Articles 7, 24, 25 and 26 enshrined in the
UNCRPD through mobilization, partnership development and alliance building processes; To improve the quality of
education for disabled children through taking steps towards an inclusive education national curriculum and
development of inclusive modules for teacher training curriculum; To share best practice and learning with key
stakeholders.
THE SOLUTION THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED
Organized training and workshop on inclusive education for primary school teachers and education authorities at local
as well as national level;
 Organized training on sign language and therapy for caregivers;
 Assistive devices, education materials, tuition and transportation support provided to Children with Disabilities;
 Discussed with Directorate of Primary Education for minimizing the student-teacher ratio according to the National
Primary Education Policy;
 Accessibility has been made in 85 schools through the project and shared the standard accessibility model with
Facilities Department of the Government to consider;
