ACTS ABOUT SIZE AND SCOPE

The oneclass project is scalable. VSO has secured funding for over 100 oneclasses as part of their 'Unlocking Talent'

initiative across 10 educational districts in Malawi over the next 3 years. There are currently five oneclasses and

another 30 are under construction, opening later in 2015. The goal is to reach all 5.300 primary schools in Malawi

The oneclass model provides excellent value for money. The total cost for a typical oneclass, including hardware

and construction of the classroom amounts to a little over GBP 10,000. The Apple iPad mini tablets are energy-

efficient and have a useful lifetime of at least four years

The Malawian Ministry of Education (MoEST) fully endorse the initiative and are ensuring that it is well-embedded

and adopted at all levels of the education system. This includes the Departments of Teacher Education and

Development (DTED), Inspection and Advisory Services (DIAS); Planning and Basic Education. Training to pre-service

teachers is being provided at Five Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) across Malawi

UTLOOK

In the near future, the members of the project want to scale oneclasses in Malawi and develop an application to learn

how to read, as well as a solar-powered projector to empower teachers during regular classroom time, which shall be

portable and which has the ability to connect wirelessly with an "I-Pad" or "Apple TV". The projector is easily scalable

with the potential of supporting not only teachers but also medical staff and social workers. In Uganda, the first oneclass

building is currently under construction and the onebillion software, which is the basis of the application, is being

localised into Lusoga to allow children to learn in their own language.
