FACTS ABOUT SIZE AND SCOPE
1. 2,128 children with disabilities were supported to enroll in 262 schools in Nilphamari District and an additional 400
that were already in school at the start of the project were supported to continue attending.
2. 402 teachers were trained on inclusive education and a detailed review of the primary school curriculum, textbooks
and teacher training curriculum with NCTB, DPE and NAPE is likely to result in a further 450,000 teachers receiving
effective inclusive education training.
3. The project baseline indicated that only 18% of children with disabilities in the district were going to school
regularly. Within a year of project implementation, the attendance of children with disabilities in school had
increased considerably to 66.4% and the drop-out rate had fallen from 2.9% to 0.8%.
OUTLOOK
LCD will continue to refine its inclusive education model and roll this out across Africa and Asia. This model represents
good value for money, particularly given its holistic and comprehensive nature, and yet it could easily be adapted and
replicated to new areas or environments, taking into consideration local contexts. LCD will investigate the scope for
scaling up inclusive education in Bangladesh to ensure ongoing and sustained impact.
