UTLOOK

Our model is replicable for a range of young people with additional needs it is embeded in the philosophy and research

evidence that ‘just enough support’ will develop independence build confidence, increase emotional well being which

will facilitate opportunities. Blind and partially sighted young people are isolated as they do not have the social

networks, social skills or practical life skill that their sighted peers have developed. Although these skills are developed

in early years and built upon whilst growing up often blind and partially sighted young people have been ‘over

protected’ by family units and so these skills have not developed.

Our college is looking to expand it’s provision to meet the needs of an additional 30 young people by 2018/19 and not

only will this expansion increase the social and practical integration of these young people into communities.

Our activities decrease dependence on the public purse through economic activitiy and also decrease the need for

support or residential costs. More importantly Dorton College students go on to be inclusive contributory members of

their communities and develop similar experiences and have the same opportunities as their sighted peers. Initially the

costs of implemention are high particularly the costs of house rental and adaptations which is more costly than existing

institutional models, however the longer term costs to the public purse are dramatically reduced.
