/

MISSION

The objective of the project is to organize an assistive technology mainstreamed in the national education system, to

ensure that assistive technology for people with visual impairment at work places, tertiary, secondary and primary levels

of education are developed and operationalized. Monitoring, documentation and dissemination of learning outputs

towards development and improvement of teaching and learning for people with visual impairment on assistive

technology.

T

HE SOLUTION THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED

Tanzania Education Authority (TEA), Sight savers and Tanzania League of the Blind (TLB) attempted to solve the

problem of inaccessible ICT by ensuring VIPs are equipped with computer skills and they are enjoying ICT through

Assistive Technology. Beneficiaries were education practitioners; out of them two primary school teachers attempted to

teach ICT at their respective schools. This gave clues of possibilities to teach ICT to learners with visual impairments as it

is done to others without disabilities.

The interest: 1)Pilot the idea in eight institutions involving one university, one teachers training college, three secondary

schools and three primary schools; 2) establish one computer laboratory at each of the eight benefiting institutions.

Such computer laboratories will be fully furnished with computers and computer accessories making them accessible to

VIPs; 3) develop the training curriculum of ICT subject for upper primary, secondary, tertiary level and teachers course in

the light of assistive technology; 4) Conduct trainings in application of a screen reader; 5) Translation of screen reader

into Swahili speech synthesizer for primary school will be undertaken. Because the available screen readers synthesizes

in English and other languages other than Kiswahili while Kiswahili is a medium of instruction in primary education in

Tanzania.
