From a regional perspective, 96 nominations originate in Europe (48%), 34 in Asia-Pacific (16.5%), 22 in North America

(11%), 19 in Africa (9.5%), and 18 in the Middle East (9%). One nomination is supra-national.

Roughly half of the nominations are implemented in lower income countries, the other half in the most highly

developed countries (as defined by the Human Development Index of the UNDP).

Twenty seven (27) nominations are policies, i.e. regulations, laws, public policies or high-court decisions. One hundred

and seventy two (172) are practices and projects, products and services that have been developed by NGOs, social

entrepreneurs, businesses or universities.

A preliminary screening of all the nominations attributes them to the following fields of work (double counting can

occur, since many nominations work in two or more of these fields):

20 (10%) in early childhood intervention;

119 (59.5%) in primary and/or secondary education;

57 (28.5%) in tertiary education;

27 (13.5%) in vocational training and education; and

32 (16%) in non-formal or adult education.

One hundred and six (106) of the selected nominations (53%) use information/communication technology (ICT). In 59 of

those shortlisted, ICT is directly related to education, whereas in 47 of those shortlisted, ICT is generally used as a tool to

communicate or transfer information.

Completing the selection process

The Zero Project has already proceeded further in the selection process since the completion of this shortlist. In

September and early October, more than 250 experts voted on all innovative practices. The chosen nominations are

now being researched be the Zero Project team as the last step in the selection process. This will be finished by the end

of November. The selection process of the shortlisted policies is done separately, but using a similar approach.

How to use this Workbook

This Workbook has been created for the internal use only of selected partners of the Zero Project, and is not an official

publication of the Zero Project. The Zero Project Report 2016 and the Zero Project website will contain the final

selection of “Innovative Practices and Policies of the Zero Project on Education and ICT”. This will be both launched and

published in February 2016.

The Workbook contains summaries of all 200 shortlisted nominations, based on the original nominations that the Zero

Project received. Nominations submitted in languages other than English were translated by professional translators or

native speakers with expertise in disability issues.

The summaries use the original language of the nominators. No editing was done up to the shortlisting stage (except

translations, as mentioned), and, with a few exceptions, neither nominators nor nominees were contacted. The

summaries may, therefore, also include inappropriate language, typos or other mistakes, for which the Zero Project can

take no responsibility.

Every summary can be found on a double page, sorted by the country of origin of the organization that was nominated.

The 173 nominated practices are listed first, then the 23 nominated policies.

The PDF version can be searched using keywords. Some important keywords have already been included in an index at

the end of the Workbook.
