MISSION

To work with persons with disabilities, Emergency Management Organizations (EMOs) and the education system to

provide emergency and disaster preparedness information relevant to PWD living in Canada's North Education

Component: -working to ensure individual emergency plans for students with disabilities - developing educational and

curriculum materials that can be used by lay persons and teachers with no prior knowledge about disability, to inform

and educate students about disabilities. From elementary to high school.

HE SOLUTION THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED

Working with EMOs to ensure that community plans include and can address the emergency sheltering, transportation,

communication, education and health needs of PWD working with PWD to ensure they are education on the steps to

take to prepare for an emergency, and steps to take during an emergency. Working with the Education System to

ensure they have plans that address the emergency preparedness and response plans of students with disabilities, and

educating students about disability awareness to reduce bullying and social exclusion of PWD.

Reviewing and providing constructive feedback on EMO community emergency response plans to ensure they are

disability inclusive. Working with them to update and change legislation and standard operating procedures.

Developed a series of tools directed at PWD providing general emergency information as well as disability specific

information on steps to take for preparation and response. Information is available online in accessible formats and

in printed format

Developing a series of curriculum tools for the education system, on activities related to PWD, and inclusive sports.

In addition, a Student Safety in Schools document being adopted by the departments on creating individualized

emergency plans for students with disabilities.
